Craps: The Rules

Beginners at the game of craps can often be intimidated by what seem to be complex rules. The gaming table for craps is covered in lines and writing, and a game map is laid out on the table. Besides that, approaching a craps table while a game is in session if you are a beginner can be very interesting experience. The game is known for its vibrant and vivacious atmosphere, so beginners may find themselves to be a bit flabbergasted if they have never played before.

The Basics

The rules for craps will begin with the shooter. The shooter is also called the dice thrower. The dice thrower is the source of all the excitement at the craps table, as the other players surround the shooter and cheer him on as he rolls the dice. There are a few basic rules to understand about the game before you begin playing, whether you are the shooter or someone standing on the sidelines. For the shooter, there are several things to keep in mind, however.

If you are throwing the dice and you throw a seven or an eleven on your first roll, you win the game and you may throw the dice again. If you roll a two, three, or a 12 on your first roll, you will have lost the game. However, if you roll anything other than these numbers, then a point is established. For example, if you roll a three and a six—equaling nine—then your established point would be nine.

It is against this number that the shooter will now be playing. As the shooter, you will throw the dice until you reach the established point or you roll a seven. If you hit the point, you will win the game. But if you hit the seven, you will lose your bet.

While the shooter places a wager on his roll, the other bettors can also place wagers for or against the shooter. In this way, anyone can bet on the toss. It is this kind of variety and quickness that the game offers that makes craps so popular with bettors. Learning the basic rules of how to play can help to ensure your first craps experience is smooth and exciting.
