| Craps: Placing a Bet
Now that you are more familiar with some of the terminology and basic rules used to play the game of craps, you need to become acquainted with how to place a bet before trying your hand at the game itself. There are several different options you have when determining which type of bet to place. The outcome of the dice the shooter throws can have a big impact on your winnings depending on the type of bet you place.
The Different Bets
The most common and most frequently placed bet in craps is called the pass line bet. In this type of bet, you would place all your chips inside the area of the betting table called the pass line. The pass line is located along the edge of the betting table in front of all the other players. If you roll a winning combination on your first try out, you can place a new pass line bet. But if you roll a losing combination on your first roll out, you must pass the dice to the next person on the right. The betting continues in this way down the line.
You can also make a bet called a don’t pass bet. Instead of placing your chips on the pass line, you would place them on the don’t pass bar on the gaming table. The bets in this instance are somewhat reversed. For example, if you roll a seven or an 11, you will lose your bet. If you roll a two or a three, on the other hand, you will win. Rolling a 12 means you have reached a draw and get to keep your original bet.
The come and don’t come bets are simply bets made in addition to other bets. You place your chips in a specially marked area in addition to whether you placed another type of bet such as a don’t pass bet. When the point has been established –in the case that the player doesn’t win or lose on the first roll—placing this type of bet ensures you are playing against true odds, which means the house does not have an advantage in that scenario.
Whichever type of bet you choose to place will depend on your skill level and comfort level with taking a risk.
